One in Four Small Businesses Don’t Use Social Media

According to a recent survey by iContact of 1000 small business owners they found that one in four are still not fans of Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn or Groupon.  The overall study uncovers information about each of these social media platforms.

  •             75 percent of all respondents gave Facebook a favorable rating.  Businesses in the travel and tourism sector gave the highest favorable response.
  •             63 percent of the respondents gave LinkedIn a positive rating.  Those companies with revenues of over 25 million annually gave the highest favorable rating.
  •             56 percent gave Twitter a favorable response with the highest percentage coming from those in government and politics.
  •             48 percent gave Google+ a favorable rating but it is still too early to tell given the companies late arrival into the social media arena.
  •             70 percent of businesses gave Groupon a negative response.  Over 40 percent of businesses that use Groupon once, don’t use it again.  Primarily because the new customers that were attracted to these businesses because of the 50 percent discount just aren’t coming back.

It’s not surprising that there are small businesses that have not embracing social media.   We have found at Impact Target Marketing that a percentage of our small business clients  have stayed away from social media because it is difficult to learn how to use and they’re not confident it will help them get new business.  According to a June 2011 survey by Hiscox, 64% of the small business decision makers surveyed said social media was either not necessary, they didn’t know enough about it, or had no opinion; only 12% were frequent users of social media; and 24% participated just occasionally. This research reveals that the majority of respondents are apathetic about the business benefit of social media engagement.

There’s no doubt social media works.  It is an extension of word of mouth recommendations in text form.  Further the survey by Hiscox quoted in a blog post by Hubspot on social media, found that that 50% of small business decision makers said word-of-mouth recommendations are a marketing tool they can’t do without. Just about two in five respondents said word of mouth was the main way they generated business.
